Cremation Urns for Human Ashes: Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT CREMATION URNS & URN TYPES
What is a cremation urn?
A cremation urn is a container designed to hold cremated remains, commonly called ashes. Cremation urns, urns for human ashes, and urns for ashes all describe the same basic type of memorial container. Depending on its size and intended use, the vessel may serve as a funeral urn, home urn, burial urn, or niche urn.
What is the difference between a full-size urn and a keepsake urn?
A full-size cremation urn is designed to hold all the cremated remains of one adult. A keepsake urn—also called a small urn, mini urn, or miniature urn—holds only a portion. Small keepsake urns and keepsake sets of three are helpful when relatives wish to divide ashes among family members.
What is a companion urn?
A companion urn, sometimes called a double urn, provides enough capacity for the cremated remains of two adults. Companion urns are often chosen for couples or partners who wish to remain together. A large or extra-large urn is not automatically a companion urn, so compare its listed cubic-inch capacity with the total amount of ashes.
What are cremation containers, cremation containers for ashes, and cremation boxes?
Online, the phrases “cremation containers for ashes” and “cremation boxes” often describe urns or boxes that store cremated remains after cremation. In U.S. funeral terminology, however, a cremation or alternative container may refer to the enclosure used for the body during cremation. Our products are memorial containers for ashes after cremation, not containers used inside the cremator.
What is the difference between a funeral urn, memorial urn, and home urn?
These terms usually describe how an urn is used rather than completely different products. A funeral urn may be displayed during a funeral or memorial service. A home urn is selected for respectful display or storage at home, while memorial urn is a broader term for any vessel used to honor a loved one. One urn may serve all three purposes.
What is a decorative urn?
A decorative urn combines secure storage with an artistic design suitable for a memorial display. Our unique cremation urns include butterfly urns for ashes, hummingbird cremation urns, angel urns for ashes, engraved cross urns, military urns, floral designs, peacock urns, Tree of Life styles, and modern teardrop urns. Many are beautiful urns that do not look like traditional urns, and every design can be chosen for a woman or man.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT URN SIZE & CAPACITY
How should I choose the right cremation urn?
Begin with five factors: capacity, intended use, material, exterior dimensions, and design. Make sure the urn can hold the ashes, then consider whether it will be displayed at home, buried, or placed in a columbarium niche. Select a design that meaningfully reflects the mother, father, spouse, woman, man, or other loved one being honored.
How do I choose the right urn size for adult ashes?
Choose an adult urn by its internal capacity rather than its height or outside appearance. Full-size urns for human ashes are also commonly described online as adult urns, large urns, or big urns. These terms are not standardized. Many cremation urns for adults hold about 200 cubic inches, but always check the exact capacity on the product page.
What if I am unsure how much space the ashes will require?
The amount of human ashes can vary with body size, bone structure, and the cremation process. Ask the funeral home or crematory for the approximate volume or dimensions of the temporary ashes container. Choose an urn with at least that much internal capacity; selecting a slightly larger urn is generally safer, and the vessel does not need to be filled completely.
When are small urns and mini urns appropriate?
Small urns for ashes and mini urns normally hold a portion rather than all the ashes of an adult. They are appropriate when remains will be divided among relatives, when someone wants to preserve a symbolic amount at home, or when creating a family memorial set. Terms such as small urn, mini urn, tiny urn, and miniature urn do not represent one universal capacity.
What is a keepsake urn, and how much does it hold?
A keepsake urn is a small memorial container designed to hold a portion of cremated remains. Many MEILINXU keepsake urns for human ashes hold approximately 3 cubic inches, including individual keepsakes and keepsake sets of three, although capacity varies by model. These cremation keepsakes may also hold a lock of hair or another small, dry remembrance.
Can a small urn be used for an infant’s ashes?
A small urn or miniature urn may be suitable for an infant or young child, depending on the amount of cremated remains. Do not select an infant urn by its name alone. Ask the funeral home to confirm the approximate volume, and then choose a small urn for human ashes with equal or greater capacity.
MATERIALS, CRAFTSMANSHIP & THREADED LIDS
What materials are your urns made from?
Our full-size adult urns, large urns, big urns, and larger-capacity designs are made from high-quality aluminum. Depending on the model, our small keepsake urns and keepsake sets of three are made from aluminum or brass. The material is identified on each product page, including products in our traditional and teardrop collections.
What are the advantages of aluminum and brass cremation urns?
Aluminum cremation urns are durable, relatively lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and less likely to break during normal handling than ceramic or porcelain urns. They are also lighter than many marble or natural-stone urns and support detailed engraving and decorative finishes. Brass cremation urns and brass keepsakes provide similarly durable metal construction.
Where are your urns made, and are they handcrafted?
Yes. MEILINXU urns are handcrafted in India by skilled artisans and made for customers in the United States. Because decorative details and finishes are completed by hand, slight variations may occur. These subtle differences help give each memorial urn its individual character.
How does the threaded lid secure the ashes?
Every full-size adult urn, small keepsake urn, and keepsake set includes a threaded screw-top lid designed to create a tight, secure closure. It helps prevent accidental opening and provides added protection during normal indoor storage. For additional security, keep the cremated remains inside the sealed bag supplied by the crematory.
FILLING, DISPLAYING & SHARING CREMATED REMAINS
How should cremated remains be placed inside the urn?
Cremated remains are usually returned in a sealed plastic bag inside a temporary container. The simplest method is to place that sealed bag directly inside the urn, which keeps the ashes securely contained and reduces the risk of spills. If the bag must be opened or the remains transferred, consider asking a funeral director or crematory professional for assistance.
Can I bring the urn with ashes home?
Yes. Many families choose home urns so their loved one’s cremated remains can be kept in a meaningful location. Place the urn on a stable, dry surface away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, children, and pets. Local requirements may apply if you later transport, scatter, or bury the ashes.
Can cremated remains be divided among several urns?
Yes. Many families place most of the ashes in one full-size adult urn and share smaller portions in keepsake urns for ashes, mini urns, or a keepsake set of three. This creates individual urns and keepsakes for ashes while allowing several relatives to preserve a personal remembrance. A funeral home can help divide and transfer the ashes carefully.
Can I give a keepsake urn to a family member?
Yes. An ashes keepsake can be a deeply personal memorial gift for someone who wishes to preserve a small portion of the cremated remains. Keepsake urns for Mom or Dad, a husband or wife, a grandmother or grandfather, or another loved one can provide a private place of remembrance. Confirm that the recipient is comfortable receiving it.
Can I place other memorial items inside the urn?
Yes. Along with or instead of ashes, an urn may hold small, dry mementos such as a lock of hair, a piece of fabric, a handwritten note, dried flowers, or a small amount of soil from a meaningful location. These items can create a unique memorial keepsake. Avoid liquids, and make sure nothing interferes with the threaded lid.
BURIAL, COLUMBARIUM & OTHER MEMORIAL USES
Can an aluminum urn be used for burial or placed in a columbarium niche?
Many aluminum urns can be used as cremation urns for burial, but cemetery requirements vary. Before using one as a ground-burial urn, ask whether an urn vault or outer burial container is required. For a niche urn, compare the columbarium opening and interior dimensions with the urn’s exterior measurements. For water burial, use a purpose-made biodegradable urn rather than a metal urn.
What is an urn vault?
An urn vault is a protective outer container placed around a burial urn in the ground. It can help protect the urn from soil pressure and ground movement while supporting cemetery maintenance. Some cemeteries require urn vaults for burial urns for human ashes, while others do not, so confirm the cemetery’s rules before purchasing one.
Can an unused urn hold wedding mementos or other keepsakes?
Although our products are primarily designed as containers for human ashes, an unused urn may hold dry personal keepsakes, including wedding mementos, letters, or small family heirlooms. An urn that has held cremated human remains should continue to be treated as a memorial container and should never be used for food or beverages.
Can I use the urn as a planter or place it near plants?
Our sealed metal urns are not designed to be planters and should not be filled with soil or water. You may place an urn beside a houseplant, floral arrangement, or memorial garden as a meaningful display, provided the urn remains dry and stands on a stable surface.
Can an urn for human ashes also hold the ashes of a dog or cat?
Yes. The same type of secure metal urn can be used either for human ashes or for the cremated remains of a dog or cat, provided its capacity is sufficient. This does not mean human and animal remains need to be combined. Our products are designed primarily as urns for human ashes and are not pet-specific, so ask the pet crematory to confirm the returned volume. A 3-cubic-inch keepsake would usually hold only a small portion, while a larger urn may hold all the ashes.
